Where do I even start to describe what was happening in my head when I made this vid? It’s emotional, dynamic, suspenseful, dramatic, over-the-top pretentious and I love it. It’s a bit of a slow-burner, so if you’re not familiar with the series it might not seem very interesting to you.

To be honest, it’s a pretty standard re-telling of the events of season 4, but it’s probably best if you just go ahead and watch it to get your own feel for the narrative. I think this is one of those vids where I probably shouldn't try and say too much about it and let it just speak for itself.

Originally I’d been planning a full-length Kara vid (with lyrics and everything!) for quite a while, but that didn’t seem to be going anywhere and probably wouldn’t happen without re-watching the entire series of BSG. All in all it seemed like a lot of work if I wanted to get it right and I don’t really have the time for that kind of thing right now.

So along comes this incredible piece of music (but more on that later) and I just felt like it had to be done. Even just listening to the music, I could see the vid practically making itself in my head. Follow Me into the Darkness is 5.44 minutes of epicness, but it was the post-rock instrumental section of the second half that screamed Battlestar at me. Probably what drew me to focus on the ‘Starbuck’s Special Destiny’ arc was that it’s piano-based music, and the entire concept of her story revolves around this piano motif. And the drama. Of course, the drama.

I won't say too much about the vid itself because I'd rather people form their own thoughts on it, but you'll notice that the narrative is broken up into 5 distinct sections that I tried to keep knit as closely as possible to tell the story.

Finally, about the music itself. This is the closing track of the new Fightstar album be human, which I've been listening to almost non-stop since its release on Monday. I actually can't wait for some vidders to get their hands on some of these tracks - it's such a cinematic record from start to finish and some of the best orchestral-rock I've heard since Neon Ballroom.

Comments

That was absolutely stunning. Beautiful narrative and editing. One of those vids that you don't want to end.
Thanks for giving your thoughts =]
I kind of wish I'd been able to make this as a "full length" vid, but for what it is, I'm very happy with it.
OMG you're back!! And with a vid! :D It's great to see something new from you. This was beautiful and so different from your usual style. Lovely pacing and a nice build as the music adds more layers and becomes more intense. And I love the cut to black around 2:00. It's really impactful to see Kara's season four arc condensed like this. Awesome work!! :D
Yay, thanks for watching!
I've tried a bunch of vids out that gradually got more and more awkward until they fell apart completely, but this all came together quite effortlessly in two days (I guess it helps that I've been sick in bed the whole time hah).
I know what you mean, Kara's arc is amazing, but it's so spread out that in retrospect it's actually nice to see it all put together.
This is extremely powerful. I love the way you strung the narrative together. Great work.
Thanks very much, I'm glad you think so.

I figured this would be a good vid to ease me back in so to speak, heh.
wow it was amazing, a powerful tribute to Starbuck's dark side, thanks for that !
Thanks! I love that she had probably the darkest story on the show, but it turned out to be the most hopeful.
I have no words to say how much I love it. I've been watching it non-stop since I found it some hours ago. Simply awesome :)
Wow, my first vid in about a year and I am definitely appreciating the supportive feedback :D
You totally deserve it! Hope you make a lot more! :D
That was astoundingly beautiful! You really conveyed Kara's emotional chaos and her fear of facing exactly what her "special destiny" may be. A lot of times vids done to instrumental music are just not done well and they don't connect the video footage with the emotional intent of the music but you did it brilliantly! Really lovely!
Thanks muchly for the feedback.

I think there's a very strong musical connection between this song and that particular story arc. I put it down to the piano melody running throughout* and since I structured the whole concept around it, I don't think I could have done this vid with any other song =]

*(And also the strings. For the dramas of course.)
That was amazing! I loved every single frame and the music you chose fit perfectly. Thank you for sharing!!
Thanks, I'm so glad this has been so well received!
I really liked this. The music choice was beautiful and haunting. I think it is great that you choose to focus on the final 'purpose' Kara had to fulfil, instead of making it too complicated by trying to show the whole 'destiny' through all the seasons.
Great timing on clip changes!
Thanks :D I actually started vidding with the sequence of Kara plotting the jump co-ordinates and then worked backwards towards the beginning of the timeline heh. I always knew that's where I wanted it to 'end', the moment she puts it all together herself (even though there are some clips after it) so I purposely left out the last scenes of her on Earth.
I left a comment on YT, but I'm leaving one here as well. That was amazing, it gave me chills. You've got every single second edited perfectly with the music, and it is indeed epic music.
Thanks, that's so great to hear =)
This is beautifully done. I especially enjoyed how the mood changed from opening to end. Not from sad to happy exactly, but the feeling of oppression is lifted while the look of the vid is upheld. Very pretty. :}
Thanks very much. Of all the vids I've made, this is the one that had the clearest start and end points of the journey.
That was powerful in every sense of the word. I especially love what you did with the source footage of the piano. That final shot of the fire was a perfect and beautiful exclamation point.

Loved this. A lot.

Man, it's nice to have you back. :)
Thanks Brad! :D That's so nice of you. I kind of wish I'd stuck around here more the past year even though I wasn't contributing much.

I was a bit uneasy about the piano parts - mainly cause I was like "Are people gonna think this is stupid and that I'm just trying to be cool by matching the piano playing to the music?" In the end, I decided to go for it because of the story connection and that I really did need the piano to drive Kara to her end-goal.
Wow, that's some comeback vid!

I love way you used the piano footage throughout without it ever seeming forced. This feels totally different from any other Starbuck vid I've seen and I would love it for that alone but the fact that you gave a real emotional depth to Starbuck's destiny arc is what really makes me glad you decided to make it.
This is definitely some of the most complimentary feedback I've ever had. Thanks a lot =)
Oh wow this gave me chills.
Really powerful stuff. And I have to agree, the way you've strung the narrative together is perfect :)
I'm getting such ideal feedback on this vid, it's ridiculous ^_^
I liked your vid! the song worked perfectly for Kara's story.
Thanks, I'm really glad you think so. To me, this music has such a BSG tone
Fantastic.

Seriously, this is brilliant. It really captures all the brilliant parts of Starbuck's season four story and the music is beautiful.

I'm off to download and watch again.
I'm so happy to be getting such positive comments. I was pretty worried about attempting a BSG vid since everything I've seen so far in this fandom has been just epic.
A haunting, amazing vid. The music choice was excellent and focusing on the piano influences was... fantastic. I loved it. ♥
It's great to hear that the piano elements are working for people =)
Wonderful! It feels very much a part of BSG: beautiful and kinda melodramatic. :) Oh, Kara.

(Definitely going to check out the band!)
beautiful and kinda melodramatic.
I think that's a perfect description of Kara hehe
What a powerful narrative! The music worked so well for Kara, the destiny arc and the recurring piano imagery, but I'm most impressed with how cohesive your visual narrative is. The journey from drama to climax to closure is just about perfect!
Thank you =) The song works so well for the narrative I had in mind, starting off from the bottom and gradually building bigger and bigger until it reaches epic-dramas.

Really helped me to position some of the milestones, like Kara's viper exploding and the moment when she discovers her dead body - then everything else was kind of structured around that.
This is really beautiful. I love it!
This was beautiful. I'm not much of a vid-watcher; this is the first instrumental vid that has really worked for me.
Thanks. I'm usually not so big on instrumentals either but I think this one works because the music has such distinct progression, which makes for better storytelling.
I loved this. The vid’s subdued colouring and fragmented images encapsulates the Kara of the final episodes perfectly. The not-quite-Kara who had her memories but hadn’t had to live through them, which somehow give her the distance to finally piece together the puzzle of herself. And you give her an ending that feels right. With fire, not just fade away.
This is gorgeous, I love how you've connected her arc and actually really enjoy how it slowly builds. This song is perfect. The whole thing feels very lonely to me but also powerful. Especially with that closing shot.
I love the way you pulled together season four's narrative for Starbuck and her destiny. The piano music underlying the whole vid does a great job creating a sense that something epic and complex, yet deeply personal and private, is playing out. That, to me, was the struggle that Kara Thrace was going through from the very start of the series. Bravo!
How powerful is this vid? SO powerful. I just fell in love with Kara Thrace all over again. You've done her late season 3-4.5 arc justice and then some. Chills and emotion and so much hope and feeling. You've got a great eye/ear and amazing talent. Thank you for sharing!
You did a great job fitting the mood and pace of the music as it gains in intensity. That shot at the end of Kara burning her own body worked really well. I loved it.
Thanks very much =) You have no idea how long it took me to decide how this vid was gonna end. Turns out I went for the most obvious (but I think the most appropriate) heh.
This is very nicely done. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks, I'm really glad to see that this is still getting views
