Where do I even start to describe what was happening in my head when I made this vid? It’s emotional, dynamic, suspenseful, dramatic, over-the-top pretentious and I love it. It’s a bit of a slow-burner, so if you’re not familiar with the series it might not seem very interesting to you.
To be honest, it’s a pretty standard re-telling of the events of season 4, but it’s probably best if you just go ahead and watch it to get your own feel for the narrative. I think this is one of those vids where I probably shouldn't try and say too much about it and let it just speak for itself.
Originally I’d been planning a full-length Kara vid (with lyrics and everything!) for quite a while, but that didn’t seem to be going anywhere and probably wouldn’t happen without re-watching the entire series of BSG. All in all it seemed like a lot of work if I wanted to get it right and I don’t really have the time for that kind of thing right now.
So along comes this incredible piece of music (but more on that later) and I just felt like it had to be done. Even just listening to the music, I could see the vid practically making itself in my head. Follow Me into the Darkness is 5.44 minutes of epicness, but it was the post-rock instrumental section of the second half that screamed Battlestar at me. Probably what drew me to focus on the ‘Starbuck’s Special Destiny’ arc was that it’s piano-based music, and the entire concept of her story revolves around this piano motif. And the drama. Of course, the drama.
I won't say too much about the vid itself because I'd rather people form their own thoughts on it, but you'll notice that the narrative is broken up into 5 distinct sections that I tried to keep knit as closely as possible to tell the story.
Finally, about the music itself. This is the closing track of the new Fightstar album be human, which I've been listening to almost non-stop since its release on Monday. I actually can't wait for some vidders to get their hands on some of these tracks - it's such a cinematic record from start to finish and some of the best orchestral-rock I've heard since Neon Ballroom.

I kind of wish I'd been able to make this as a "full length" vid, but for what it is, I'm very happy with it.
I've tried a bunch of vids out that gradually got more and more awkward until they fell apart completely, but this all came together quite effortlessly in two days (I guess it helps that I've been sick in bed the whole time hah).
I know what you mean, Kara's arc is amazing, but it's so spread out that in retrospect it's actually nice to see it all put together.
I figured this would be a good vid to ease me back in so to speak, heh.
I think there's a very strong musical connection between this song and that particular story arc. I put it down to the piano melody running throughout* and since I structured the whole concept around it, I don't think I could have done this vid with any other song =]
*(And also the strings. For the dramas of course.)
Great timing on clip changes!
Loved this. A lot.
Man, it's nice to have you back. :)
I was a bit uneasy about the piano parts - mainly cause I was like "Are people gonna think this is stupid and that I'm just trying to be cool by matching the piano playing to the music?" In the end, I decided to go for it because of the story connection and that I really did need the piano to drive Kara to her end-goal.
I love way you used the piano footage throughout without it ever seeming forced. This feels totally different from any other Starbuck vid I've seen and I would love it for that alone but the fact that you gave a real emotional depth to Starbuck's destiny arc is what really makes me glad you decided to make it.
Really powerful stuff. And I have to agree, the way you've strung the narrative together is perfect :)
Seriously, this is brilliant. It really captures all the brilliant parts of Starbuck's season four story and the music is beautiful.
I'm off to download and watch again.
(Definitely going to check out the band!)
I think that's a perfect description of Kara hehe
Really helped me to position some of the milestones, like Kara's viper exploding and the moment when she discovers her dead body - then everything else was kind of structured around that.
